  • One in four families is headed by a lone parent. 90% of lone parents are female. Nearly half (49%) of one parent families live in poverty, more than twice the proportion of any other family type, including pensioners. (One Parent Families/ Gingerbread Annual Review 2006/07)
  • 30% of women have an income of less than £100 a week, compared to 14% of men (TUC, The Iron Triangle 2008)
  • On average, men outnumber women in the cabinets of EU governments by around three to one (24% women, 76% men) (European Commission, Women and Men in decision-making 2007)
  • For working women in Wales, the average hourly earnings continue to be 12% lower than male counterparts and this figure rises to 31.2% for part-time employment (EOC, Facts about Men and Women in Wales, 2006)
  • Nearly 25% of women who made an employment tribunal claim had been dismissed within hours of telling their employer about their pregnancy and one in five women returning from maternity leave were given lower grade jobs. (EOC, Pregnancy Discrimination at Work, 2004)
  • 66% of pensioners living alone are women and their income is only 57% of male pensioners (EOC, The Gender Agenda - Wales Review 2006)
